Bird List

Ornate Hawk-eagle - From the Verandah of the Asa Wright Nature Centre (© H.P. Nelson 2005)

Over a number of years, the list of birds that may be seen on the Centre’s grounds has grown to 166 species.

Most of our visitors participate in the tours organized by Caligo Ventures as well as through specialty Bird Tour companies from the U.S and the U.K. If you add to that figure the number of additional species that may be seen as a result of trips that can be taken away from the Centre, the total number of birds seen, for example on a typical Caligo Ventures tour, could be over 200 species!

The nesting of the Crested Oropendola colony near the main house has always been a spectacular sight for visitors, but Ornate Hawk-eagles and Channel-billed Toucans perching near the verandah have often drawn the greatest enthusiasm in recent years.

Numerous leks of both White-bearded Manakin and Golden-headed Manakin are found along the trails of the Centre and the bell-like “bong” of the Bearded Bellbird can be heard continuously.

NOTE: This is the current checklist for species observed on the Asa Wright Nature Centre property since the inauguration of the Trinidad and Tobago Rare Bird Committee (TTRBC) in 1995. http://rbc.ttfnc.org/.

Please visit the TTRBC Species Review List on this page for a list of species which are considered rare and for which the TTRBC would welcome a report: http://rbc.ttfnc.org/ttrbcPub.shtml

Please use the form on this page to report observations of any birds on the TTRBC Species Review List: http://rbc.ttfnc.org/ttrbcFrm.shtml

Nomenclature and order follows AOU/SACC 2013.

STATUS SYMBOLS:
(O) Occasional is used for a species that you are considered fortunate to find/see/hear during a one week stay at the appropriate season and (R) Rare is designed for truly rare occurrences, say no more than five ever or a for a species that requires assessment/verification by the T&T Rare Birds Committee as noted above.
